Dynamically Adjust Map

Use it!

Used to interactively adjust the size, position and orientation of a pattern map or a bump map.

Icons across the top of the tool settings window let you select the adjustment mode: Move, Scale or Rotate. The icon to the right of the Map option opens the Map Editor dialog box.

This tool can be selected from either the Rendering Tools tool box, or from the Map Editor dialog box. If you select it from the:

Tool SettingEffect
Map

Lets you select the type of map to be adjusted.

  • Pattern
  • — (Not available if no pattern map associated with the material) Lets you adjust the pattern map associated with the material.
  • Bump
  • — (Not available if no bump map associated with the material) Lets you adjust the bump map associated with the material.
Open Map Editor icon

(Not available if no map associated with the material) Opens the Map Editor dialog box for the Pattern or Bump map.

Method

Lets you choose the method of moving/scaling maps.

  • Interactive
  • — Lets you adjust a pattern/bump map interactively in a view.
  • Absolute
  • — Lets you adjust a pattern/bump map by selecting a reference point on the image and then defining the required location for that point on the element.
  • 3 Points
  • — (Scale Map only) Lets you define the scaling by three points — origin, reference, and scale amount.
Lock (scale) icon

(Scale Map only) Lets you lock the x, y, and z scale values.

  • On (locked)
  • — Scaling of the map is applied to the x, y, and z axes of the map.
  • Off (unlocked)
  • — Scaling is applied only to the axes defined by the data points.
Move Map (icon)

Lets you adjust the position of a pattern/bump map.

Scale Map (icon)

Lets you scale a pattern/bump map. When you select Scale Map, a lock icon appears to the right of the Method menu. This lets you lock the x, y, and z scale values.

Rotate Map (icon)

Lets you rotate a pattern/bump map.

Rotate Map is not supported for 3D procedural maps.

To move a map with Method: Interactive
  1. In the Dynamically Adjust Map tool settings, select the Move Map icon.

  2. Identify an element whose map is to be adjusted.
The map displays on the element.

  3. Set Method to Interactive.

  4. Enter a data point to define a reference point on the element.

  5. Move the pointer to reposition the map and accept with a data point.
If the Map Editor dialog box is open, the Offset values for the map update automatically as you move it.

  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 to reposition the map, or Reset to complete.

To move a map with Method: Absolute
  1. In the Dynamically Adjust Map tool settings, select the Move Map icon.

  2. Select an element whose map is to be adjusted.
The map displays on the element.

  3. Set Method to Absolute.
The tool settings expand to display the map in a window. The arrow icon to the right lets you toggle the display of this window.

  4. If necessary, use the tools at the bottom of the pattern display window to help you find the required point on the map.

  5. Enter a data point on the image (in the window) to define the reference point.

  6. Enter a data point on the element to locate the map's reference point on the element.

  7. Repeat step 6 to relocate the map's reference point on the element, or Reset to complete.

To scale a map interactively with Method: 3 Points
  1. In the Dynamically Adjust Map tool settings, select the Scale Map icon.

  2. Select an element whose map is to be adjusted.
The map displays on the element.

  3. Set Method to 3 Points.

  4. Enter a data point to define the point on the element to scale about.

  5. Enter a data point to select a reference point on the element.
As you move the pointer, this point on the map follows. If the Map Editor dialog box is open, the Size and Offset items update.

  6. Move the pointer and enter a data point to define the scale for the map.

To scale a map with Method: Absolute
  1. In the Dynamically Adjust Map tool settings, select the Scale Map icon.

  2. Select an element whose map is to be adjusted.
The map displays on the element.

  3. Set Method to Absolute.
The tool settings expand to display the map in a window. The arrow icon to the right lets you toggle the display of this window.

  4. If necessary, use the tools at the bottom of the pattern display window to help you find the required point on the map.

  5. Enter a data point on the image (in the window) to define the origin point to scale about.

  6. Enter a data point on the image (in the window) to define the reference point.

  7. If necessary, repeat steps 5 and 6 to redefine the origin and reference scale points.

  8. Enter a data point on the element to set the corresponding image origin.
As you move the pointer, the reference point for the image follows, causing the map to be scaled. If the Map Editor dialog box is open, the Size and Offset items update.

  9. Enter a data point to derine the scale for the map.

To rotate a map
  1. In the Dynamically Adjust Map tool settings, select the Rotate Map icon.

  2. Select an element whose map is to be adjusted.

  3. Enter a data point to define the pivot point.

  4. Enter a data point to define the start of the rotation.
As you move the pointer, the map will rotate with it. If the Map Editor dialog box is open, the Rotation and Offset items update.

  5. Enter a data point to accept the current rotation, or Reset to set new pivot and start points.
